The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) on Thursday applauded the passage of the National Health Bill (NHB) by the Senate, saying it would put a stop to avoidable deaths of Nigerians.

The statement quoted Enabulele as expressing gratitude to the senate, particularly the Senate President and the Committee on Health in ensuring the passage of the bill.
It also stated that the association thanked Nigerians, particularly ordinary Nigerians, the press and women for their undiluted courage, firm resolve and unparalleled patriotic commitment.
The statement called on the leadership of the House of Representatives and the House Committee on Health to do same and give Nigerians cause to celebrate.
It stated that the passage of the NHB would help to substantially reverse the trend of frequent and unnecessary foreign medical trips, and make Nigeria a destination for medical tourism.
Enthronement of a National Health Act, the statement noted would help to put a stop to the avoidable deaths of Nigerians as a result of poor and inequitable access to healthcare services.
The statement called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and not rest on their oars until the NHB became an act.
“We assure all Nigerians that the NMA shall continually ensure that their health rights are secured in more fundamental ways through the enthronement of a National Health Act.’’
NAN reports that the bill provisions seek among other things, minimum package of basic healthcare services, provision of free medical care for children less than five years of age.
It stated that it protect pregnant mothers, the elderly and people with disabilities, among others.
