US secretary of state accuses Assad of obstructing Syria talks

U.S. Secretary of State Kerry gives a statement to the press after the meeting with Palestinian President Abbas in RamallahU.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday accused Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government of obstructing peace talks aimed at ending the civil war.

“The regime stonewalled, he did nothing but continue to drop barrels of bombs on his own people,’’ Kerry said after talks in Jakarta with his Indonesian counterpart, Marty Natalegawa.

“It is clear that Bashar al-Assad is continuing to try to win on the battlefield rather than coming to the negotiation table in good faith,’’ Kerry said.

In contrast, Kerry said that the opposition presented a viable well thought-out and well-reasoned road map for the creation of a transitional governing body. (dpa/NAN)
