The President of the chamber, Dr Tim Anosike, however, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that there was the need to fast-track the project before the commencement of the rains.

“I have been monitoring the project myself and I have to thank God that it is gradually becoming a reality with the massive jobs from different sections of the project,’’ he said.

Anosike called on the government to ensure that the roads leading to the mausoleum were re-constructed to stand the test of time.

“We do not want a road that would fail after a few years since the mausoleum will be a centre of attraction in Onitsha and Anambra State,’’ he said.

The president noted that the mausoleum would add value to the economic viability of Onitsha.

“It will definitely attract a lot of foreigners who will want to see the tomb and the rest place of the great Zik of Africa as well as the first president of the country, who worked hard for the unity and peace of our great country.

“The project will bring Onitsha to its pride of place of being one of the most important cities in the sub-Saharan Africa,’’ he said.

He also called on the state government to ensure adequate security in and around the mausoleum to check the activities of hoodlums.

“In fact, the army barrack close to the place should post soldiers regularly there to check the activities of hoodlums.’’

The project was rewarded in January 2013 at the cost of N1.49 billion and is expected to be completed within 13 months.

It comprises of a conference centre, a library and a gallery.
