Leeds could be braced for an Italian influx, with the Championship club’s deadline day being dominated by talk of new owners rather than new players.

The Elland Road club is in a state of flux after Sport Capital’s expected takeover of the club, fronted by the club’s managing director David Haigh, collapsed on Thursday.

That has left Massimo Cellino, owner of Serie A side Cagliari, in pole position to purchase a controlling stake in the club.

He is thought to be keen on bringing in long-tine friend Gianluca Festa as manager and it is understood Cellino asked for the former Middlesbrough defender to sit in the dugout for Leeds’ 1-1 draw with Ipswich on Tuesday.

Current boss Brian McDermott insists the off-field chaos at Elland Road is out of his control as he prepares his team for tomorrow’s home Yorkshire derby with Huddersfield.

The former Reading manager said: ‘Every time you’re a manager it could be your last game.

‘That’s how it works in football, so you make the most of every game, especially when you’re manager of Leeds United because it’s a privilege.’
