Spanish club Valencia are looking to make Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko their top transfer target if Singaporean businessman Peter Lim completes his €400million (SGD$700m) takeover of the club, according to Marca on Friday.

Lim, who has targeted a place in next season’s Champions League, has promised to provide €30m to €50m (SGD$87.5m) to fund player purchases to improve the current squad and is keen to make the Bosnian his first signing.

Having scored only 23 goals in 17 league matches this season, Valencia are clearly struggling to fill the void created by top scorer Roberto Soldado’s departure and see the 27-year-old as a potential solution.

Soldado’s replacement, Helder Postiga, has disappointed this season, scoring only three league goals.

With Bosnia & Herzegovina having qualified for the World Cup in June, Dzeko may be keen to move in order to get regular first team football as he is firmly behind fellow strikers Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo in the City pecking order.

Dzeko, whose contract expires in 2015, moved from Bundesliga club Wolfsburg in 2011 for £27m and has struggled this season, scoring only three league goals as well.

However, with Aguero expected to be injured for another four weeks, City manager Manuel Pellegrini may be reluctant to let Dzeko leave in January unless a replacement is found.

Valencia also face stiff competition from Inter Milan for Dzeko’s signature and are closely monitoring the situation.

Inter have already enquired about Dzeko’s asking price and have themselves been boosted by the cash injection provided by Indonesian Erick Thohir’s takeover of the club.

Cash-strapped Valencia are 11th in the league and recently hired former San Lorenzo manager Juan Antonio Pizzi to replace Miroslav Djukic.
