He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna that Tuberculosis (TB) was an airborne disease,  adding that every quarter of the year, new infections were recorded.

According to him, the enlightenment is to ensure that residents of the state who have cough for more than two weeks go for screening, saying the drugs and equipment are available.

Gajere, however, urged patients already on TB drugs to adhere strictly to the WHO guidelines for the control of the disease.

He said 3,000 patients had enrolled for treatment in the various centres in the state.

“We want to get more patients to get the treatment because drugs and equipment are available but only few patients are coming.

“Some are shy when they know they are positive but I encourage them to come and benefit,” he added.

He advised Nigerians to be careful where they go, as there was no TB vaccine for adults.

Gajere said that there were 168 centres and 63 laboratories across the state, adding that Nigerians should always go for screening to know their health status.

“Once you have cough that is lasting for two weeks or more, go for screening to know your status,” he said.

He said the test, screening and treatment for TB were free and urged Nigerians to utilise the offer to know their status. (NAN)
