The assembly, at a plenary session in Osogbo, suspended Akinola for three months without salary “for nonchalant attitude” to the ongoing 10-kilometre road construction in the area.

Akinola, who appeared before the house, could not give satisfactory account of the level of work done on the project.

He also told the house that he had no list of the number of kilometres of roads in the council.

The disposition of the director prompted Mr Folorunsho Bamisayemi (APC-Ife South) to recommend his suspension.

“What the director has done today is just to show this house that he is not serious and we should let him realise that we are serious here,” Bamisayemi said.

Other lawmakers who supported the recommendation include Akintunde Adegboye, Ipoola Binuyo, Kamardeen Akanbi, Wasiu Adebayo, Timothy Owoeye and Mohammed Ibrahim.

The lawmakers berated the director for alleged inability to provide all the necessary documents before the house.

Binuyo said the disposition of the director reflected the attitude of many local government officials.

The Speaker, Najeem Salaam, while recommending the suspension, said that the house was concerned with the ongoing projects in the state and would not allow anybody to truncate government’s efforts.

“We are very serious about what we are doing so that we will fulfil the promises we made to the people and we will not allow anybody to take us for granted.

“It is now clear that the local government system is rotten and it has gotten to the time that we are putting an end to this,” Salaam said.
