Environmentalist warns on dangers of high vehicular emission in Lagos

An environmentalist, Mr Odumeru Musiliudeen, on Tuesday said that the increasing vehicular emissions in Lagos constituted  major threat to the city’s status as the nation’s commercial nerve center.

Musiliudeen, National Vice Chairman, Environment Division, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), made the observation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

He said that the emission of dangerous carbon monoxide into the choked Lagos environment demanded intervention of the state government.

He said that while Lagos residents needed sustained enlightenment on the dangers of heavy vehicular emissions, that government owed its a duty to overhaul the laws on carbon monoxide emission.

The environmentalist also expressed displeasure at the number of unserviceable vehicles on Lagos roads, stressing that the bad vehicles were the cause of carbon monoxide emissions.

Musiliudeen also urged government to increase the number of government-owned buses as a means of checking vehicular emissions.

“The traffic gridlock, in most cases, are due poor state of the roads.  Availability of few cars on the road would help to reduce emission of carbon monoxide which pollutes the environment.

“If government will introduce good transit network system that will encourage urban dwellers to park their cars and use more of public transportation, it will help to protect the environment,” he said.

According to him, people in developed nations are making progress in conserving and preserving their environment.
