The statement is coming on the eve of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities; which is annually marked on Dec. 3.
The statement said that governments should rise against attitudes that could fuel stigma and institutionalise discrimination.
It said that countries should be committed to take national and international actions to support persons with disability.
“We need to work harder to ensure that infrastructure and services support inclusive, equitable and sustainable development for all.
“This includes guaranteeing meaningful participation in processes that affect the rights and interests of persons with disabilities by providing an enabling environment,” the statement said.
The statement said that the UN would inaugurate a UN Accessibility Centre at the UN headquarters to carter for some of the needs of persons with disability.
The statement called on governments and UN member countries, businesses and civil society groups to break barriers and open doors of opportunities for all persons with disability. (NAN)
