Anieke spoke at a mass on Sunday, in Enugu, to kick start celebrations to mark the first convocation of the university.

In his sermon, the vice chancellor said it was a combination of hard work and cooperation that enabled the university to attain the current height it had attained academically.

Anieke lauded the collaboration among the institution’s board of trustees, governing council,  senate, academic and the non-academic staff, noting that it was what made it possible for them to excel.

He added that unity among the priests also offered a platform for the university to successfully enthrone high academic and spiritual standards.

Speaking with newsmen later, Anieke said it was a pity that students in the public universities had been suffering for more than four months through no fault of theirs.

He spoke against the backdrop of the prolonged strike by public university lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Anieke said that President Goodluck Jonathan might have been misrepresented by the news media, which quoted him as saying that the striking lecturers must resume academic activities on or before Dec. 4.

The vice chancellor noted that Jonathan had promised to continue to negotiate with the ASUU so that the students could go back to school.

One of the clerics, the Rev. Fr Paul Agu, urged the authorities of the federal universities and the Federal Government to pay sincere attention to education in the country.

Agu also called for peace among Nigerians, irrespective of their religious beliefs. (NAN)
