Not Even IBB, Ciroma Can Stop Jonathan From Winning 2015 Polls – Presidency

Ahead of the 2015 general elections, the Presidency yesterday said prominent northern leaders, including Alhaji Adamu Ciroma and a former Military President, Ibrahim Babangida cannot stop President Goodluck Jonathan if he decides to run for second term.

Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Mr. Ahmed Gulak, stated this while responding to a recent media report that prominent northern politicians had set up a committee whose membership included Ciroma and Babangida to work against Jonathan’s second term ambition. He was speaking in an interview with the PUNCH newspaper.

According to Gulak, it was on record that the President floored other candidates in the 2011 presidential election without the support of the alleged individuals and was ready to re-enact the same in 2015.

Ahmed Gulak“I am not aware of the setting up of such a committee. What I can tell you however is that if you recall, those people whose names you just mentioned did not support President Jonathan in 2011 and that did not stop him from winning. So this latest move too cannot stop him if he decides to contest in 2015,” he said.

Gulak refuted the claim by Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State that the Presidency had bribed over 400 northern leaders to support Jonathan in 2015.

He therefore challenged the governor to name the politicians that were bribed, insisting that Jonathan had never bribed anybody to win an election.

“What I can simply say is that Mr. President is not used to bribing people. We challenge Aliyu to name the people that were bribed,” he said.

Aliyu had on Saturday in Minna, at the 25th anniversary celebration of the enthronement of the Emir of Minna, vowed to expose over 400 northerners who betrayed the region after collecting money from mercenaries ahead of the 2015 general elections.
