The Bank’s Zonal Head, Alhaji Abdullahi Mainasara, said this at the flag-off of the eye screening exercise in Sambawa, Kebbi, on Wednesday.

Mainasara said the involvement of the bank was part of its corporate social responsibility.

“The bank intervened in the joint efforts with Indian Tulsi Chanrai Foundation to combat cataract and other diseases considering that young people were ravaged by the disease.

“The bank will sustain the community outreach to create awareness to enable people with eye defects benefit from the free services.”

Mainasara said that about 9,000 people with various eye defects had benefited from the bank’s support so far across the country.

Dr Sath Yanarayana, the programme manager of the foundation, said the screened patients would be referred to Hafsat Hospital,  managed by the foundation in the Birnin Kebbi, for the free treatment.

Yanarayana said the involvement of the bank in conjunction with the foundation in the treatment of eye diseases had reduced the hardship faced by rural dwellers.

The Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Shehu Sambawa, commended the bank and the foundation for providing free eye treatment to rural dwellers in the state.

Sambawa urged individuals and corporate organisations to emulate the joint efforts.

He assured that the state government would continue to sustain the provision of medical care to rural dwellers, adding, however, that “government alone cannot do everything”. (NAN)
