UNDP Nigeria gets new country director


180..1.1317364Dr Pa Lamin Beyai is the new Country Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for Nigeria, a statement from the organisation, has said.

The statement issued by the UNDP’s Communication Specialist, Mr Kelechi Onyemaobi, in Abuja on Tuesday said that Beyai was a Gambian national.

It said that Beyai replaced the former UNDP Country Director for Nigeria, Ms Ade Mamonyane Lekoetje, who completed her tour of duty in Nigeria in August 2013.

“Dr Beyai comes to UNDP Nigeria with a wealth of experience acquired over the last 25 years, in both the private and the public sectors, at national and international levels.

“His focus is on development issues and operation-related policies.

“Until his assignment to Nigeria, he served as the Economic Advisor and Lead, Inclusive Growth Cluster, in the UNDP Country Office, Ghana,’’ the statement said.

It said that Beyai had a Ph.D in Economics, with a focus on Health Economics, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London.

“Dr Beyai has a master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom, and a B.Sc. degree in Economics from the Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone,” it added.

The statement said that Beyai was married with four children.

It further stated that working under the delegated authority of Mr Daouda Toure, the UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative to Nigeria, Beyai had assumed responsibility for the day-to-day management of UNDP activities in Nigeria. (NAN)
