The victim, identified as Weky Akparakazi, was shot dead and dispossessed of a considerable amount of cash meant for the payment of teachers’ salaries.

According to a source at the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the late Mr. Akparakazi was the headmaster of Community Primary School, Foutorugbene, in Ekeremor LGA.

The source, who is based in Yenogoa, the Bayelsa State capital, spoke to SaharaReporters today. He revealed that the attack occurred on November 9 at about 9.45 p.m.

The source added that some of the other passengers in the commercial boat sustained serious machete injuries in the attack. Among the injured passengers was Mr. Daula Garuwa of Isampou community, a former Education Secretary in Ekeremor LGA.

The source explained that friends and family members of the deceased headmaster were shocked when the news of his violent death reached the state capital.

The source said that those who survived the attack disclosed that the armed pirates stormed the boat and unleashed mayhem on the passengers, hauling away cash and valuables, including the teachers’ salaries.

“The bandits reportedly pushed the injured passengers into the water and upturned the speed boat after detaching the outboard engine,” the source said.

However, a spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Alex Akhigbe, said the police had not yet received any official report on the incident.

“Though [an] official report has not been filed with the police, we have since directed our marine components to be on red alert,” Mr. Akhigbe said.
