Wike lauds UNESCO for establishing regional office in Abuja

wikeMr Nyesom Wike,  the Supervising Minister of Education,  has commended UNESCO for establishing its West Africa Regional Office in Abuja, Nigeria.

Wike made the commendation at the launch of a book: UNESCO-Nigeria Cooperation in the Education Sector from 1960 to 2013.

The launch was on the sideline of the ongoing 37th Session of the UNESCO General Conference in Paris.

The minister said the nation was proud to be part of UNESCO’s efforts to bring the oganisation closer to its member states.

He noted the various areas of cooperation between Nigeria and UNESCO in the past 50 years, stressing the nation’s commitment to the organisation’s cause.

Mrs Irina Bokova, the Director-General of UNESCO, expressed gratitude to Nigeria for cooperating with the body.

Bokova noted that Nigeria was one of UNESCO’s giants especially in the areas of education and culture.

Prof. Victor Owhotu, the author of the book, said it captured the cooperation between Nigeria and UNESCO in the field of education.

Owhotu said it became necessary for him to write the book having served at the Nigeria National Commission for UNESCO for a decade.

The event attracted delegates attending the general conference and Nigerian scholars in France.

The UNESCO Regional Office in Abuja was inaugurated on Sept. 13 to coordinate activities of the agency in eight countries in the West African sub-region. (NAN)
