The Director of Liaison, Abuja Study Centre, made the disclosure when the university launched a sensitisation campaign on its programmes, vision and mission in Abuja.
She told newsmen that “NOUN is offering all Nigerians the opportunity to learn, work and graduate without any fear of strikes because the Act establishing the university does not permit unionism.’’
According to her, the Federal Government, through NOUN, is also offering equal opportunities for all Nigerians to have quality education because the university has study centres even in prisons.
“This is because education should have no age barrier as everyone has a right to education.’’
Izang said the Federal Government introduced the open university system of education, a form of education that is practised globally, to ensure attainable education for all categories of Nigerians.
The director, who however said most Nigerians were not aware of NOUN mission and vision, added that the university has the capacity to enrol many students because of the flexibility of its programmes.
She noted that by its design, no classrooms and other structure were required to run the courses “because everything is Internet-based.
“That is why we want to create awareness because many people are ignorant of the opportunities provided by the Federal Government for all Nigerians to have quality and flexible education.
“NOUN has more than 50 study centres scattered all over the country, including the ones in state capitals.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the sensitisation was marked with rallies and distribution of flyers, as NOUN officials educate the public on the mandate of the university. (NAN)
