British govt to partner with Oyo on trade, education, others


bristish-oyo-drum_400The British Government said it was prepared to partner with the Oyo State government in the areas of trade and investment, education and gender related issues in the nearest future.

Mr Peter Carter, Deputy British High Commissioner, disclosed this yesterday, in Ibadan, during a courtesy visit to the state governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, in his office.

‘‘The British Government is ready to help Nigeria in the areas of education, gender equality related matters and trade and investments.

Carter, who said that the Commission had not paid attention to the Western Region of Nigeria of recent, except Lagos State, however, stated that it was planning to train over 200 school teachers in Oyo State through the British Council.

He observed that Ibadan was rapidly developing in preparation for the future, saying ‘‘trade and investments and other opportunities abound in the city.’’

Responding, Governor Ajimobi, who appreciated the offer from the British Government, said that Oyo State was the political and intellectual capital of Old Western Region.

Senator Ajimobi said that “Oyo State has the heritage in terms of good education with thousands of students and several schools.”

The governor said that many investors coming to Nigeria have made Oyo State one of their preferred destinations because of its peaceful environment, landmass and its support to investors.

In a related development, the British Deputy High Commissioner has cleared the air on the issue of £3,000 visa bond, saying ‘‘it does not exist.’’

‘‘The issue of £3,000 visa bond does not exist. It is a proposal being considered by British Government. We have good visa relationship with Nigeria,’’ he said.

He said that Britain would continue to encourage Nigerians to come to Britain and do business.
