Orubebe and 89 Niger Delta youths trained in agriculture under the Federal Government Empowerment Programme on Thursday in Abuja traded words over the delay in the disbursement of funds.

Orubebe explained that the funds made available will only be disbursed to youths with plots of land, saying, “Nobody will buy land for anybody not at any cost. Anybody who has no land will not be supported by the ministry of Niger Delta. I am going to support those who believe me by the end of this month. We are here because we want to support our brothers and sisters. By Monday, our teams will go round in the Niger Delta State.”

But the aggrieved youths claimed that three years after the completion of training in various agricultural programmes, the disbursement of their take off funds was yet to be actualized.

Victor Otoboh, who spoke on behalf of other aggrieved youths, said it was not proper for the ministry to keep calling them to Abuja when funds were not ready to be made available to them.

He said over 80 per cent of trained Niger Delta youths returned to the country broke because the ministry failed to fulfill its promise of providing financial assistance.

“We have not seen any reasons to listen to your submissions of today. We are not happy today. We will not return to our homes empty handed. It is time for people to know that Niger Delta youths can do something outside oil.

“It is because of too much movement to Abuja that we lost two of our members because of bring proposal today and tomorrow.

“We know the government respects those who take up arms. We will not do so because we are educated and peace loving people. Please give us a better hope, not jamboree. If it is only transport you want to give us to go back home, it will not go down well.”
