The Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Benjamin Ezra Dikki, disclosed this plan on Wednesday in Kuchikau, Nasarawa State, while speaking to a section of non management staff of the organization during a workshop.

“As it now obtains, all manner of things are uploaded on the various platforms of the Social Media without recourse to age and sensibilities of the users,” Mr Dikki said. “This is not good enough.”

Mr. Dikki expressed dissatisfaction over government’s negligence of activities that are uploaded on the internet, saying the BPE was going to employ stringent rules in that regards.

“In line with its reform mandate, the Bureau plans to initiate necessary policies and the legal framework for the regulation of the Social Media in the country,” Chigbo Anichebe, head of the Bureau’s public communication, said in a statement.

He affirmed that monitoring activities on the social media will further justify why the government should retain its service even after the sales of government property were completed.

He urged the staff to work hard towards achieving the set goal of the BPE, as it has enormous mandates to transform various sectors of the nation’s economy.

It would be recalled that when the Senate President spoke on a similar subject of banning certain online activities in the country, he was attacked by majority of Nigerian internet users.

The nation’s social media patronage is constantly on the rise, and has continued to threaten politicians who have lived below the expectation of the masses.

The social media has become a major medium to access the opinions of Nigerians on very topical national issues.
