Details of the results also indicated that no fewer than 69.57 per cent of the candidates that sat for the examinations made, at least, five credits to qualify them for admissions into tertiary institutions.

Announcing the results at the conference hall of the headquarters of the examination body in Minna, Niger State, the Registrar/Chief Executive of the examination body, Professor Promise Okpala, said 96.55 per cent of the candidates  made five passes and above, while 0.80 per cent of the candidates were involved in examination malpractices.

“It is very important to note that there has been improvement in students’ performance in SSCE over  the past three years.

“For instance, the improvement in the performance (as depicted by number of students who have made five credits and above) rises from 15.84 per cent (2011) through 51.66 percent (2012) to 69.57 per cent (2013),” Okpala said.

He stressed that concerted efforts should be made to sustain the rising profile in the quality of students’ performance at the SSCE, saying that the ultimate goal was to make Nigerian education system more effective.

He said the relatively low percentage of students involved in examination malpractices (0.88 per cent and 0.80 per cent  for 2012 and 2013 respectively) showed efforts by the council at curbing it were effective.

“I want to also note that  the increasing  level of efficiency in the conduct of NECO examinations is as a result of  the achievements made in the council in the last few years,” he said.
