It was an act of mother’s inhumnity to her child when a 19- year-old lady, Nsidibe Effiong strangled and dumped her three weeks-old baby in a pit toilet, blaming her act on frustration.
We gathered that Effiong had her first child less than a year and a half ago and was still nursing and breast-feeding him when she gave birth to the second one.
the suspect, who hails from Ikot Abasi Idem village in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government of Akwa ibom state was pregnant and was due to put to bed, but was later found by her neigbours to be without the pregnancy or the baby.
Curious and suspicious, they launched into action by calling the attention of the police to their discovery.
Investigation by the police later revealed that the lady had strangled the three weeks-old baby and dropped her in a pit toilet few weeks after delivery.
Being paraded at the Akwa bom state Police Headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia, the police commissioner, Mr. Solomon Arase told journalists that Nsidebe had admitted committing the crime and had confessed that she had strangled the baby with a towel and dumped it into a pit toilet.
Pleading for leniency by the police, Nsidibe maintained that it was poverty that drove her into the act, saying that the man who was responsible for the pregnancy had fled the vicinity as soon as he discovered that she was pregnant.
