Jonathan’s Sponsored Northern Elders Council, Attacks Northern Elders Forum

Date:

Jonathan-and-SamboThe newly formed Northern Elders Council, or NEC, a body set-up to champion the 2015 cause of President Goodluck Jonathan in the north, has condemned its arch-rivals, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF.) The rift is over the latter body’s stand on Jonathan’s power struggle with some northern governors and politicians.

In a press statement released in Abuja, Ambassador Yusuf Yaro Mamman, on behalf of the Jonathan financed NEC that is under the leadership of Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, stated in part, “The attention of the Northern Elders Council is drawn to the news items jointly signed by the Arewa Consultative Forum, (ACF,) and Northern Elders Forum (NEF) Secretaries Col. John Ubah (rtd) and Dr. Hakeem Baba Ahmed on the current imbroglio between some Northern Governors and the Presidency.”

It also said that, “it is a matter of outmost regret that an organisation like the ACF, which is an umbrella organisation that serves as a Pan Northern Platform, will lend itself to the manipulation of the NEF, which is an organisation that has consistently, openly and manifestly advocated violence, threats and intimidation.

“It is on record that the NEF harbours intemperate and bellicose disposition, which has largely alienated it from a substantial segment of good and well meaning Northerners. For the ACF to agree to submit a joint statement with the NEF is unfortunate, and absolutely regrettable. The NEF has consistently sought to arrogate itself the right to speak and act in a very divisive, unpatriotic, unstatesman-like and partisan manner. This we reject. It is unacceptable.

The strongly worded release did not stop there, adding that, “the integrity and credibility of the ACF will surely be tested, if politically partisan groups are allowed to leverage on its goodwill, to create chaos and promote their hate and selfish agenda. We appeal to the ACF leadership to remain non-partisan, and an all inclusive Northern Platform.”

Before the publishing of this story the two northern groups targeted by the Jonathan-backed council were silent. The strongly worded release has rocked the leadership of the two groups, and it is believed that officials from both the NEL, and ACF will formally respond to the criticism.
