Awka—Following the dissolution of Anambra State executive of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the state legal adviser of the party, Mr. Afam Akonanya, its chairman for Dunukofia Local Government Area, Mr. Andrew Modili and a ward chairman from Okija, Pius Okafor, have dragged the national chairman of the PDP caretaker committee, Ahmed Makarfi; national secretary, Senator Ndii Obi, and the party to an Anambra High Court sitting in Awka challenging the dissolution.
Tempers rose among lawyers from the plaintiffs and the defendants when the matter came up before Justice Chukwudi Okaa, who had to adjourn the matter till tomorrow. Akonanya said at the court premises, yesterday, that it was surprising that the national leadership of PDP would dissolve the Anambra State executive of PDP which emerged through properly conducted congress in 2016.
Akonanya said: “The essence of the institution of this matter is to ensure that the right thing is done. An election was conducted in Anambra PDP wherein the execute members were elected at the ward, local government and state levels only for the party to set up a caretaker committee in place of an elected executive, which the party conducted.
“The same party conducted this election and for the party to summersault to dissolve the elected executive is not acceptable to us.” That is why we want the court to look into this matter and ensure that justice is done.
“You cannot, after electing some persons to serve in specific positions, turn around to sack them without any justifiable reason, only to set up a caretaker committee that was not even elected.” He described the near fisticuffs among lawyers during the hearing of the matter as normal, adding that court is a theatre of war.
Vanguard recalls that the Anambra State executive of PDP was among those dissolved by the national caretaker committee after the Supreme Court declaration of Ahmed Makarfi as the authentic leader of the party.
