The Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Umahi has approved the setting up of a National Mathematical Center in the state.
Giving the approval when the members of National Mathematical Centre paid him courtesy call at the Government House, Abakaliki, Umahi, who enumerated the importance of Mathematics, observed that the number of students offering sciences in tertiary institutions were on the decline because Sciences have to do with Mathematics.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Emma Anya, he said that sciences would solve the problem of Nigeria, adding that the Ebonyi State Government is interested in making the subject attractive to students.
He said: “There are a lot of advantages in embracing mathematics. It trains the brain. It makes the brain to always on be on the alert. I think it has a way of giving mental training and that’s why we are very much interested.
“Sciences which are laid on the platform of Mathematics is a way out for this country. When you take census of our students in the university level, you will find out that only about 10% of the number are doing sciences and that is very big problem.
” I want to believe that you’ve offered us a very good opportunity. Without hesitation we have approved the National Mathematical Center in Ebonyi State.”
The governor also inaugurated an eight-man committee to spearhead the Mathematics Improvement Project to ensure its smooth take off in the state.
He charged the committee members to give a situation report to the state Executive Council on weekly basis until it is fully established.
He appreciated the Director of the NMC, Prof Stephen Onah , for the innovation and assured him of his commitment to the goal.
Earlier, Onah eulogized the governor for his giant strides and for his effort to ensure that Ebonyi children are educated.
He also appreciated the governor for the assistance given to them to hold a two-week workshop in the state and pointed out that the establishment of the National Mathematics Centre in the state will enhance teaching and learning of Mathematics.
