A 20-year-old man, Waliu Ponkunh, who allegedly hit a 14-year-old boy with an iron rod on the head and killed him, was on Monday remanded in a Lagos prison.
An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court which gave the ruling, said Ponkunh should be kept behind bars at Ikoyi Prisons pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Chief Magistrate O.O. A Fowowe-Erusianfe ordered that the case file should be sent to the DPP.
The accused is facing a charge of murder.
Earlier, prosecutor, Sgt. Maria Dauda told the court that the accused committed the offence on Feb. 15 at about 5.00 p.m. at No. 19, William Awodehin Drive, Oko-Oba GRA in Agege, a Lagos suburb.
She alleged that the accused had an argument with the deceased about who was older, and in the process, he picked an iron rod and hit the deceased, Emmanuel Akinola, on the head.
“He was confirmed dead when he was rushed to the hospital.’’
The offence contravened Section 222 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section stipulates death sentence for offenders.
The case has been adjourned until April 20.
