Ambode seeks proactive approach to law enforcement in Lagos


Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has called on all the law enforcement agencies in the state to be more proactive in enforcing the laws that would impact positively on the people’s living condition and bring sanity to the society.

Speaking Monday at the year 2016 annual mandatory in- service training programme for the law enforcement officers in the state public service, Governor Ambode noted that law “is only effective when it is enforced to bring significant development to the society, emphasizing that, it is the enforcement of the law that brings about orderliness and balance in the society.”

He charged various law enforcement agencies in the state to be proactive in their duty of law enforcement and discharge their duty in a way that people will have confidence and trust in the law and the law enforcement officers.

As law enforcement officers, the Governor reminded them that they are the face of the law and urged them to make professionalism the hallmark of law enforcement in the state., assuring that his administration will continue to place high emphasis on law enforcement and give serious considerations to all possible innovations that could positively impact on the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies in the state.

“The enforcement of the rule of law is cardinal objective of our administration. As a result, we pay a lot of emphasis on law enforcement and constantly give serious consideration to all innovations that could positively impact on the effectiveness of our law,’’ he stated.

While urging the law officers to take advantage of the training to update their knowledge, he promised that his administration would continue to strengthen various law enforcement agencies and ensure they attain desired level of professionalism required to enforce the law in a mega city like Lagos.

As a demonstration of this commitment, the Governor stated that his administration recently inaugurated the Special Offences Mobile Court to summarily deal with growing cases of traffic and environmental abuses in the state with a view to bringing sanity and civility in the conduct of residents especially on environmental matters.

He further disclosed that the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corp Law was recently passed by the State House of Assembly to ensure safety of lives of the residents. Adding that his administration would stand at nothing to guarantee security of lives and property of the residents.

The Governor, while acknowledging the fact that Lagosians overtime have expressed concern and fear about crime and public safety in the state, he promised that his administration will do everything humanly possible to restore people’s confident and trust in the law enforcement agencies who are at the fore front of enforcing the law and orders, noting that his administration has always ensured that arrested  criminals and social miscreants are brought to book to serve as deterrent to others.

The Governor who stated that the Lagos State Law Enforcement Training Institute is statutorily required by law to train and equip Law Enforcement Agencies with appropriate and requisite skills needed for the assigned task, also disclosed that the Institute from the inception has effectively trained a total number of eleven thousands, eight hundred and forty one officers from the State.

Earlier in his address, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem stated that it is in the interest of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration to strengthen law and order that the governor directed that all the state law enforcement agencies must undergo  the mandatory refresher training to ensure that there is civility in the firmness required  by the law enforcers in the discharge of their duties and invariably the enforcement of the state laws in the overall  interest of the public.

He added that the Institute was set up to formulate and implement training standards in line with global best practices, to ensure ethical behaviour and promote professionalism among various Law enforcement operatives of the State with particular emphasis on traffic and environmental Law Enforcement.
