Besides, to sustain businesses in recession, Arabome said that the development of human resource talents cannot be overemphasised as it requires the discovery of opportunity in diversity.

anthony-arabomeSpeaking ahead of the 48th yearly national conference in Lagos, the president said there was need to get out of recession rather quickly, by addressing problems bedevilling the country.

He said: “For government to get out of recession, continuous work to shore up the naira is important; but naira is not going to get its strength if the local production is not increased and export.

“Government needs to do something about the lending rate that would promote savings and create room money for investment. Made in Nigeria goods needs to be promoted, we need to work on our craftsmen by providing vocational training for them to become more skilled. We need to start teaching people about entrepreneurship.

“It is a proven fact that you can get more motivation, creativity, innovation, commitment and energy from your workforce if you are willing to fully unleash their talent and duly recognize it,” he said.

According to him, inflation as of last month stood at 17.6 per cent, which is the highest double digit figure in over 10-15 years, which needs to be tackled. Government needs to create a single digit interest to attract foreign investors as part of efforts to increase Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

“What makes the developed countries great is the philosophy of discovering opportunity in diversity. We are confident that despite the trouble we are facing, we still have the human talent. All these economic trouble hasn’t wiped away our incalculable solid minerals reservoir. It does not remove our agricultural potentials. There are a lot of potentials to be tapped from these natural resources.”

Speaking on the intervention of the Institute to tackle unemployment, he said CIPM has taken its place in the scheme of things. Rather than criticise the government, it has become part of the solution to the country’s economic challenge.

He said: “We would provoke the thinking of the government. We are hoping that with the amount of time, talent, capability and resources that is still left, we have more than enough to bounce back if we do the right set of things now.

“The reason most developed countries are successful is because they saw the need to make sure civil service is a fulcrum of national development. They paid attention to developing the civil service in a way that some of the best grades coming out of universities are willing to work within the public and private sector. These are the types of values we are trying to instil in Nigeria.

The 48thedition of the conference, which is slated for October 18 to the 20, will feature four plenary sessions, eight Master Series Sessions, seven Human Resource (HR) clinics, awards and world-class exhibitions that would host both Nigerian and international exhibitors.

With the theme, ‘People, Potentials, Possibilities’, the conference seeks to explore, exploit and activate significant and specific set of industry issues and emerging trends in the HR world that will create a paradigm shift in the way practitioners think and act.

The opening panel discussion, which has been deliberately selected to address Nigeria’s unemployment challenge, including all key stakeholders will be led by the Senior Special Assistant to Nigeria’s Vice President on Job Creation/Youth employment, Afolabi Imoukhede, alongside the Chairman for CIPM’s Managing National Unemployment Challenge Committee (MNUC) initiative, Dr. Musa Rabiu with other notable speakers include the Executive Chairman, African Centre for Shared Development Capacity Building , Prof. OluAjakaye, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige and the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah.

Chairman, Conference Committee, Timitope Ologunoye, said the conference is one of the first that gives care for attention to HR clinics. It is a place where we treat people with their sick organisations into the theatre to examine and bring them back alive. There are opportunities for ready fit workplace application solutions to issues. The conference won’t be about theories and concepts.
