Kano PDP in disarray as Ganduje controls APC machinery

Date:

With the victory recorded in Kano State by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the April 11 gubernatorial election, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state appears dead.
Although political activities have slowed down in the state, the ruling party is effectively in charge. There is also a re-alignment of forces as some of the loyalists of former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso are daily pitching their tents with the new governor.
Observers say that the new administration of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in the state is trying to settle down for governance, but appears constrained by the huge public debt of about N300 billion left behind by Kwankwaso.
One of the implications of the public debt on the new administration is its inability to commence the implementations of its electoral promises. The only tangible thing the government has been able to achieve is prompt payment of salaries of public workers.
BD SUNDAY gathered that the huge debt profile of the state has started to affect the relationship between Governor Ganduje, and his former boss, Kwankwaso, as there is noticeable “un-healthy relationship” between them.
Crisis is also brewing at the moment in the Kwankwasiyya political group formed by Kwankwaso.
It was also learnt that the confusion in the group is as a result of the alleged refusal of the new governor, Ganduje, to appoint former aides of Kwankwaso into positions in his government.
Recently, some members of the group loyal to Kwankwaso complained about what they believed was the negative attitude of the new governor towards them.
As a way of brokering peace in the group, however, Kwankwaso, it was gathered, held a meeting with Governor Ganduje, and some of his former aides in Abuja.
Although there is low level of activities in the ruling APC, it was observed Ganduje is gradually taking control of the party machinery.
The strategy he is adopting in this regard is the appointment into his cabinet, of young and influential politicians from various camps in the APC in the state. This, according to the state government, is a way of building the governor’s support base in the party.
On the other hand, it was gathered that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state is in disarray as there is no activity going on in the party.
