Date:

Nebo, who, in a statement issued by his Special Assistant (Media), Kande Daniel, expressed deep regrets over the situation, blamed it the situation on challenges with gas supply to the transmission stations.

Lagos is being under-supply by about 200 mega watts, a situation the Minister linked to the deterioration in quantity of supply on the compounded gas shortage resulting from the recent vandalism and shutdown of gas supply to the Escravos—Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS). The ELPS provides natural gas to key thermal power stations in the country.

The repair work on the pipeline, which he said was earlier completed last week, was now taking a few more days to complete due to the discovery of at least two more leaks in the process of pressurisation.

Ne stressed that the completion of repairs and re-commissioning of the pipeline, earlier planned for this week, is “now expected to be achieved before the end of January.”

Nebo however assured that work was ongoing to normalise electricity supply to parts of the country that experienced shortage recently.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the statement quoted the Minister as expressing deep regret over the situation in parts of Lagos and other areas that were affected by the reduced supply.

He maintained that though an increase in generation was recorded last week, despite the unfavourable gas situation, Lagos received a maximum load of 816MW on December 29.

This, Nebo said, was less than the required minimum of 1,000MW, describing it as inadequate and unacceptable for the nation’s commercial nerve centre.

He urged the media to continue partnering with the ministry to achieve results, and to enlighten the public on issues affecting the power sector.

Electricity supply in the country, had due to leaks on the Escravos, dropped by 625mw resulting in supply disruption of over 200 million standard cubic feet of gas per day to power plants, an event that occurred in 2012.

This is came a few days after the country lost 450mw to the shutdown of Shiroro Hydro-electric Power Station in Niger State as a result of low water level at Kaduna River.

The power plants affected by the gas shortage then included Egbin Power Station in Lagos, Sapele Power Station, which is operated under the National Independent Power Project (NIPP) and Ughelli Station both in Delta State. Others include Geregu in Kogi State, Omotosho in Ondo State and Olorunsogo (Phase 2) in Ogun State.
