The Ghana Trades Union Congress has called of its intended strike, which was originally scheduled for February 9, 2012.
According to a report on Ghana Web, the TUC said it decided to call off the strike as a result of government’s decision to reduce petroleum prices by 20 per cent for petrol, diesel and LPG.
The TUC in a statement signed by its Secretary General said it arrived at the decision after an emergency Steering Committee meeting.
Below is the full statement:
“Following a 20 per cent reduction of the recent increment in prices of petrol, diesel and LPG as contained in a communiqué issued jointly by the TUG and government, the Steering Committee of the TUC at its emergency meeting held today [Monday 6 February 2012], has decided as follow:
“· The intended Councils of Labour Meetings scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, 7th February 2012 have been called off.
“· Accordingly, the planned mass protests scheduled for Thursday, 9th February 2012 have also been called off.
“In the meantime, the TUC will continue to pursue negotiations for the 2012 National Daily Minimum Wage and the review of the Single Spine Salary Structure, as part of efforts to mitigate the effects of the high cost of living on workers and their families.
“The leadership of TUC would like to thank all workers for their support in this struggle against the removal of subsidies on petroleum products.
“The leadership would also like to assure all workers that it will continue to do whatever it takes to protect the interests of workers and the general public, in particular the poor and vulnerable in society.
